saaf suthra saabun

Handmade soap

One of my first works using soap as a medium.
Infused with scents and materials drawn from everyday rituals, the saabun (soap) explores tensions between purity and impurity coexisting within a form; a religious dichotomy I was fascinated with exploring through the material. Inspired by Islamic ideas of purification, saaf suthra saabun occupies a sensory space; a space where scent and texture are in direct contact with the body.
With time, the saabun softens, dissolves and changes. I begin to explore the material's ephemeral nature, how it carries the residue of the body and how it transforms.
